Burhanpur which is associated with the famous Taj Mahal in Agra is something that most people are unaware of. In this place Shah Jahan’s beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal died during childbirth. The inspiration for the structure of the magnificent Taj Mahal is believed to have come from one of the paintings in Burhanpur. A rich history of Faruqi dynasty which founded the city in the 14th century followed by the royal Mughal era from 1601 AD. Today, the ruins in Burhanpur are a reminder of its past glory.

Umaria district is located to the North East of Madhya Pradesh. Mathematically the coordinates of the District extend from 23o38′ to 24o20′ North and 80o28′ to 82o12′ East. It has geographical area of 4548 sq.km. The greatest length of the district is about 150 km. from north to south and the greatest width is about 60km from east to west.
