Betul


Betul district, located in the heartland of India, has earned the distinction of being the origin of the river Paritra Tapti. Delhi is located on the Madras main line in the middle of Bhopal Nagpur. Situated at the focal point of unbroken India known from the survey conducted by Todarmal, one of the nine gems of Akbar the Great, this district reveals the tribal culture.

Geography:

The tribal dominated district is spread across the Satpura ranges south of Betul. In the north is the valley of the Narmada and in the south is the Maidar of Berar. The district is situated between 21 ”22 ′ to 22” 23 ′ northern latitude and 77 ”-10 ′ to 78” –33 ′ longitude. It is bounded by Hoshangabad district in the north, Amravati district of Maharashtra state in the south, Chhindwara district in the east and East Nimad (Khandwa) district in the west.

Mountain Range:

Betul district is located 365 meters above sea level and above in the mountain ranges of Satpura. The mountain range is higher on the east side. Which decreases towards the west. The average height is 653 meters high. The ranges divided into four parts are (1) Satpura mountain range (2) Tawa Mornad valley (3) Satpura plateau in the middle (4) Tapti valley.

Tava and Narmada are situated on both sides of the Satpura mountain range. The series has several high peaks. The highest peak of which is Kilnadeva 1107 meters to the east. Old forts were built on the peaks, which were useful for administration in the whole region. Tawa Valley is 396 meters above sea level. The greater part of the valley is covered with precious trees (predominant teak) and the land on the shore is fertile.

The Satpura plateau, the higher-higher peaks in the eastern part of the district, extends to the north. The highest plateau in it is 685 meters in the form of Chadi Patti. Multai tehsil 791 meters, the highest peak on the west side of Khamla village of Bhainsdehi tehsil is 1137 meters, which is the second highest peak after Pachmarhi of the state. .

Rivers: -

Among the major rivers of the district are Tapti, Tawa, Machana, Wardha, Bel, Mordand and Poorna etc. The Tapti is one of the major rivers of the south, which according to the Puranas is the Surya Putra Mahalai. It originates from a pond located at Multapi (Multai). In fact, it originates from the Satpura plateau in the north of Multai, 790 meters high, 21 '48 ′ northeast to 78 "15 ′ east, which passes through the Surat district of Gujarat state into the Arabian Sea. Its total length is 701.6 km.

The Tawa river enters from the northeast of the district, the Jaya originating from the Chhindwara district. In it further the river Machana is found, which enters Hoshangabad district in front of Dhodharamohar. On which the multipurpose major project (Tawa Dam) has been constructed near Ranipur. The dam has been constructed for the use of Satpura Thermal Power Station located in Sarni village of the district.

The Wardha river originates from the northeast of Multai tehsil and crosses 35 km and enters Maharashtra. Which later merges into the Venganga River in Chandrapur district. (467 km) The Machana River originates from the east of the district and flows northwards to Betul northern border and joins the Tawa river near Dhodharamohar. The total length of which is 185 kilometers.

Betul is one of the marginally located southern districts of Madhya Pradesh, lying almost wholly on the Satpura plateau. It occupies nearly the whole width of the satpura range between the valley of the narmada on the north and the bearer plains on the south. It forms the southernmost part of the Bhopal Division. The District extends between 21-22 and 22-24 degrees North Latitude and between 77-10 and 78-33 degrees East Longitude and forms a compact shape, almost a square with slight projection on the East and the West. Two small enclaves of the district, viz., Batla blocks of the Govt. forests lie to the West between the districts of Nimar (East) and Amaraoti. These enclaves lie on the Northern bank of the Tapti. They extent from West to East between the Meridians 77-59 and 77-02.

BOUNDARIES

The District is bounded on the NORTH by Hoshangabad, on the SOUTH by Amarawati of Maharastra, on the EAST by Chhindwara District and on the WEST by the District of Hoshangabad, East Nimar and Amarawati. The Southern boundary of the district runs almost along the southern foothills of the melghat range, but excludes hattighat and Chikalda hills in Amaroti district. The Western boundary is associated for some distance with the Ganjal river (Southern), a tributary of Tapti, and then with the watershed line between the Morand and the Ganjal (Northern), the tributaries of the Narmada. The Northern boundary is marked by the course of the Morand river, and by the TAWA river beyond Dhodra Mohar Railway station. The Eastern Boundary runs through small streams and hills among which Khurpura and Rotia Nalas are of some significance.

ORIGIN

The district derives its name from the small town of Betul Bazar about 5 km south of Badnur, the Headquarters of the district. During the Maratha regime also, in the beginning of the British rule, Betul or Betul Bazar was the district Headquarters. In 1822 the District Headquarters was shifted to the present place, then only the village came to be known as Badnur Dhana, meaning Badnur village in the local dialect. Now, even after such a long time, not only the district retains the old name, but the name of the new Headquarters town, Badnur, as also been superimposed by “BETUL”.

Betul District is situated at a distance of 178 Km from Bhopal, the state capital, it is connected to the parts of the country by air, rail and road.

By Air

Betul is not well connected to other major cities of the country via regular flights. The nearest airport is Nagpur Airport. Betul is 180 Kms from Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport Nagpur and 190 Kms from Raja Bhoj Airport Bhopal.

By Rail

Betul railway station is a main railway station in Betul district under the West Central Railway zone. Its code is BZU. It is on Itarsi- Betul – Nagpur branch line. The station consists of three platforms.

By Road

Betul is 178 KM from Bhopal by National highway. it is 173 KM from Nagpur National Highway.

Khedladurga

King Jaital ruled Betul district in the 11th century Bhopali area. His capital was in Khedladurga. Raja Jaitpal, the chieftain of this fort, gave rigorous punishment to thousands of sadhakas for not getting Brahm’s interview. Malajpur

The fair of Gurubaba Sahib in Malajpur starts every year from full moon and goes to Basant Panchami for about a month. It is believed that Baba Saheb’s samadhi is getting rid of the phantom constraints. Nobody here returns from despair. Because of this, devotees come from distant places in the fair. The development block is located in Chicholi, 42 kilometers away from Malajpur District Mainlaya. In Malajpur, Guru Gobaha Sahib’s Samadhi period is considered as 1700-1800 CE. Every year, the fair starts with the fullness of Paush. Baba Saheb’s meditation place is widely known for getting rid of the phantom obstructions. The Northern part of the district has a touch of Bundelkhandi language and culture. The Southern belt of the district has overtone of Marathi Language and Maharastrian culture. The rest of the district is predominantly tribal, populated by the Gonds and Korkus. They worshipped Bada Mahadev. Their rituals are mostly of sacrificial nature. There are other smaller ports at Asirghad and Bhawarghad in Multai tehisil some caves have been seen which are supposed to be the hiding place of the Pindaries.

At Bhainsdehi there is an Old Shiva Temple built of carved stones . The roof at long ago collapsed. At present there are some beautifully carved pillars.

7 Km from Amla there are twin village of Kazili and Kanigiya which contain old Temples of Hindus and Jains built in stone. They appeared to be places of considerable religious importance. If excavation is carried out here , it can result in the discovery of numerous objects of Archeological value.

At Muktagiri, there are some Jain Temples built on a hill as the name suggests the place had been sacred to the Jaines who came here to pass their last days. The District is famous for the apprising of the tribals against the British rule. Banjaridal a village in Betul tahisil is well known for the martyr Vishnu Singh Gond. The District participated in the growth of freedom movement so much so that no fewer than 50 volunteers to part in the Conference of congress at Nagpur.

HANDICRAFT

Tigariya Kala

The metal craft of Madhya Pradesh in the Betul district is done by the filling method or the ancient cire-perdue process. Village Salabardi under the Janpad Panchayat Prabhatapattan of Betul district is famous for its picturesque verdict and ancient cave of Lord Shiva and the oldest Shivlinga in it. The characteristic of this Shivling is that here nature itself does the consecration of Lord Shiva indefinitely. Shivaling is continuously flowing continuously from the hillside. It is a legend that this Shivaling itself has erupted from the mythical era. This place is the center of tribute to the millions of devotees of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra province.
